News & Events: Surgical Innovations Accelerator Awards

On Tuesday, November 14, the UCSF Pediatric Device Consortium (PDC) held its inaugural Pediatric Device Accelerator Pitch Competition at UCSF's Mission Bay campus. The competition awarded a total of $252,500, funded by FDA's Office of Orphan Products Development and the UCSF Department of Surgery, to teams developing novel medical devices for children. At the heart of the UC Berkeley-UCSF Master of Translational Medicine (MTM) program is a hands-on capstone project, where student teams work on developing medical technologies from idea to bedside. Six UCSF faculty pitched their medical device ideas to a panel of industry experts for the chance to win seed funding, engineering support, and product development advising at the Surgical Innovations Shark Tank on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at UCSF's Mission Bay campus. This was the 2nd Shark Tank hosted by Surgical Innovations, an internal incubator/accelerator for early-stage medical devices ideas, and the first to be open to faculty in all UCSF schools and departments. Two (2) Department of Surgery research teams were awarded seed funding totaling $40,000 to accelerate their medical device innovations. The Roboimplant device, an expandable rod for orthopaedic surgery applications, took top honors, with the Sentinel Bandage, a non-invasive technology for wound monitoring, taking second place. Join us on September 24 for Surgical Innovations Shark Tank! Four teams from the Department of Surgery will pitch their medical device technologies to a panel of experts in regulatory affairs, product development, and venture capital for the chance to receive up to $25,000 to accelerate their innovations. Panelists will provide constructive feedback with the goal of enhancing the presenters' pitches and development plans. Attendance is open to UCSF faculty, staff, and trainees.
