Evan C. Werlin, M.D., General Surgery Chief Resident, Beloved Colleague and Friend, Passes Away
Evan Charles Werlin was born December 22, 1985 and passed peacefully May 27, 2020 following a three-year hard fought battle against a rare form of cancer. Evan excelled at everything he did; graduating from Brown University Magna cum laude, and The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; and happily became a stellar general surgery resident at UCSF.
During that time, Evan received numerous awards including the prestigious Teaching Excellence Award for Cherished Housestaff (T.E.A.C.H.) in 2017 and the William P. Schecter Trauma Resident of the Year Award in 2019. Most recently, Evan matched at his top choice for the Fellowship in Vascular Surgery at UCSF. He was a skilled surgeon with a deep passion for his chosen profession.
Evan is survived by his parents, Sally and Larry Werlin; his sisters Rachel C. Schumacher and Emma W. Miller; his nieces and nephew Addison, Lorelai, Audrey, and Levi Charles; his fiancée Dr. Alyssa Perez, a pulmonary/critical care fellow at UCSF; and his most beloved cats, Minerva and Moses.

Words can’t describe what a magical, wonderful person Evan was. Everyone in the room got about 10% better just by him walking into it. A loss for medicine and a loss for the world. @UCSFSurgery @UCSFGSResidency https://t.co/D35OzGeIbf

Today was a very sad day for @UCSFSurgery and @UCSF with the loss of our colleague, friend and rising @UCSFGSResidency chief resident, Evan Werlin. His passion for surgery and joy of life (and cats!) will buoy us and reinforce our mission to serve. https://t.co/F8HlhPov03

Evan Werlin was an incredibly talented physician but an even more wonderful person. My heart goes out to those closest to him. To his family: you raised a gem of a human. His life mattered and his legacy will live on in all of those who had the privilege to know him @UCSFSurgery https://t.co/mF7h0UgGXh
